‘Backpacker Tax’ scrapped!

The ‘Backpacker Tax’ has been ruled invalid by the Australian High Court. So, if you visited Australia as a working holidaymaker between 2017 – 2020, it’s likely that you will be entitled to a significant tax refund.

Australian residents for tax purposes

If your refund is less than $1,100, our fee is $99 + handling fee.

For refunds higher than that, our minimum fee is 9% of your refund + handling fee.

Early assessment

If you’ve left Australia and would like us to apply for your refund before the end of the tax year, there are no extra charges. Our fee will be the same as those listed above.

Low refunds

For non-residents’ refunds and refunds under AU$150, our fee is AU$87 + handling fee.

I applied for an income tax refund before but wasn’t satisfied with it, can I re-apply?

The issue of residency in Australia can be complicated and it’s vital to correctly work out your residency status when you’re filing your tax refund.
Regardless of your visa type (e.g. Working Holidaymaker visa, student visa, 457 Sponsorship visa etc.), you are generally deemed a resident for tax purposes in Oz if you can show you’ve been living and working in the same location for a period of more than 6 months (183 days to be exact!).

Useful Australian tax facts

  • The Australian tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June
  • You have to be in Australia for six months before you can apply to get your tax back
  • Your individual circumstances will determine your residency status so we will check this when you apply
  • You need to provide your Tax File Number to your employer within the first 30 days to avoid paying emergency tax on your wages
