Irish PAYE tax refunds

If you’re a PAYE (Pay as You Earn) worker, such as a receptionist, nurse or a teacher, your employer will deduct tax from your earnings. Most people don’t know that they may be entitled to a refund of some of the tax paid to Revenue during the year.

Every year thousands of Irish people overpay tax with Revenue and are due tax back. Our specialised PAYE tax refund service ensures you get back all the tax you’ve overpaid to Revenue over the last four years!

If you’re paying tuition fees in respect of certain third level undergraduate or postgraduate courses or certain language or IT courses you may qualify for tax relief. It will depend on the course of study and institution.

Revenue disregards a certain amount of the qualifying fees in respect to each claim. For example, for a full-time course in 2015 the first €3,000 is disregarded from the qualifying tuition fees.

Fees for private colleges can be well above the level disregarded, which could mean a valuable tax credit.

Taxback can claim your tuition tax relief for you.

No. Tax relief in respect of service charges was abolished for the tax years 2012 onwards.

The One Parent Family Tax Credit was abolished with effect from 31st December 2013 and replaced by the Single Person Child Carer Credit.

The Single Person Child Carer Credit (SPCCC) is a tax credit for people who care for children on their own and came into effect from 1 January 2014.

It’s generally awarded to the person with whom the qualifying child lives with most of the year. This person is called the Primary Claimant.

The Primary Claimant can choose to surrender their entitlement to the credit and name a qualifying Secondary Claimant if that person lives with the child for more than 100 days in a year.

A qualifying child is:

  • Born in the tax year
  • Or aged 18 at the start of the tax year
  • Or over 18 at the start of the tax year but attending full-time university, college, school, or other educational institution,
  • Or over 18 and permanently incapacitated – either before age 21 (or after age 21 while they were receiving full-time instruction)

The Universal Social Charge (USC) was introduced in Ireland in 2011 to replace the Health & Income levies. Your income will be exempt from USC if it is less than:

  • €13,000 in 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016
  • €12,012 in 2015.

We can assist you with claiming any USC refunds you’re owed and we will check to see if you’re owed anything when you apply for a PAYE tax refund.
